Questions for the test

You can post a comment with your answers

Study Questions

  • What was your first impression of Nick Naylor? How did you feel after the opening scene on the talk show?
  • Did this film have a “hero”? Could that be Nick? The Captain? The Senator? The reporter? In what ways did they all fall short of truly being the “good” character in this story?
  • The film gives the impression that Nick’s influence on his son was not negative. Do you agree? Why or why not?
  • In what ways was the Senator a hypocrite?
  • Nick’s job was a lobbyist, but how would you describe what he did for a living? Was he a defender of the right to choose or a professional deceiver and liar?
  • Were you surprised that Heather, the reporter, betrayed Nick?
  • Nick justified what he did as a way to “pay the rent.” Did you think that was honest? What things would you do, or not do, to “pay the rent?”
  • Did your feelings change towards Nick by the end of the film? Did he change?
  • Were you satisfied with the ending of the film or would you have preferred a more ethically satisfying ending?

This week

Hi!
Remember, on Wednesday we have the Intensive test.

For Thursday we have two homeworks:

1. Workshop 1: This must be done.
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgmvk7jn_7827pk4g

2. Summarizing a Text: This document consists of 21 pages and is now at Picachu photocopy center. I can also email it to you if you want. I'm uploading it at SIGA also, but that might take a while. This document must be read for Thursday's class since we will discuss it and use it to start producing summaries.

Today we reviewed the handout about APA Referencing System. We did some exercises and finished with that.

Intensive Reading 2

Andrea spoke to me today and asked me to change the test date. I have no problems in changing the test for Wednesday as long as you write a signed list asking for that.

Again, just for the record, yesterday nobody except Daniela P. showed up with the homework done, and today only four people handed in their essays.

See you!

Vocabulary Acquisition/Learning

You have a lot to say about this topic since you have been studying EFL (English as a foreign language) for a good amount of years now to have an empirical opinion based in your own experience.
I value that. As you must have read in the articles handed out, essays are supposed to be subjective and persuasive. Just make your point clear.
Now, you need to complement your opinion and experience with scientific data or I can easily say, "That's your opinion, I respect it, but I disagee."

Good luck with your test!!!

Hi!
Remember that "responsible" is the word from me to you. Today only two people brought the material to class.

Please remember:
1. Show up to class and with the material.

Well, we have two homeworks for tomorrow:

1. Write a three-sentence summary of the reading "The stuggle to beat the cold" (page 26, booklet 1)

2. Do exercises 2 and 3 (pgs. 3-5, booklet "How to write a summary") The booklet is on the photocopy center behind the former cafeteria. I'm going to upload that one in here, too.

Well, today we started working with the booklet "How to write a summary". We read that an identified controlling ideas in paragraphs 1-7 (exercise 1). After that we answered the question about the controlling idea for paragraph 8. We then moved to "booklet 1" and read the guidelines for the exercise. (Act. 1, pg. 26) after which we did the gap filling exercise on pg. 27. Finally, I wrote some vocabulary items on the board which are important for you to have in mind. We will work with them tomorrow.

About the essay you have to write for Thursday, I will post later today. I handed out some articles that will be a good introductory reading to the topic. REMEMBER: This is not a graded exercise, it is just a diagnostic. The results of this diagnostic assessment will provide us with important insights into your current writing skills and will help me develop an appropriate plan to help you improve those skills. Underlined message: Help me help you!

All comments are welcomed!

Remember that you are more than welcome to correct spelling or grammar mistakes if you spot one here on the blog posts or comments!!

See you.

Vocabulary

Well, as a matter of fact, we haven´t done many vocabulary activities. We'll solve that in the coming lessons.
You'll have to use plenty of new vocabulary for the summaries and other activities.
The difference is that I don't like you to regurgitate vocabulary definitions, my objective is that you can use the language in meaningful communicative exchanges.
I want you to apply the knowledge, not to demonstrate your knowledge.
That does not mean that you should not look for vocabulary definitions, because you know yourself and the strategies you are used to in order to acquire the target language. I just do not see the point of making you memorize 30 definitions that you will most likely forget in 2 months. I prefer to use our classroom time to make you speak, listen and process.
There is another factor to have in mind, and that is the "plateau effect". This idea states that once students have reached an intermediate command of the target language they perceive no visible improvement. This may lead to a discouragement in the learner that must be avoided. We will fight that if it comes. Do not worry! But unless you verbalize your feelings I can not know that.
There are other factors to take into account. Students must be aware that they need to take part in their own learning.
Due to Internet, globalization and other factors, there has been a change in the paradigm. You need to take part in that. We will definitely talk about that in class.
In the meantime, please read the following:

Summarizing a text - Note taking

The class yesterday was really good and productive. I think you all got the idea of how to produce a good summary from your notes.

Keep these points in mind when you are writing a summary:

A summary:

Is shorter than the original piece of writing.
Includes an introductory sentence which refers to the source and states your controlling idea.
Includes the most important elements of the original text.
Has reminders that the ideas are coming from another text.
Is written in your own words or, when necessary, has original text in quotation marks.
Shows that you understand the original piece of writing.
Does not express your opinion of the ideas in the original text.

We will continue working to develop efficient note taking strategies in order to produce better summaries.

Here you can find more information on writing summaries:

English breakfast

How would you like it to have breakfast together this Thursday in the classroom? I could take the bread, butter and cheese, and you could volunteer to take the tea, coffee, etc.
Let's talk about it tomorrow in class. You can also take a camera to the classroom and take pictures of all of us to post later here (the day of the breakfast, not tomorrow :) ).

Remember that this Thursday we have the last review so, don't forget to have your questions written in case there's something you don't understand.
Bring the two handouts solved so we can correct any mistake and you can receive relevant feedback before the test.

Here you can download the "Review handouts". Take a look at them because there's some new information.

Calendar and Google groups

Hi, everybody!
Today I added a Google Calendar to our blog.
Check it. I hope this could be a useful tool to help you stay informed of all relevant events, tests, etc. you may think relevant to publish.
Please scroll down and click on the events. If you do that, a new window will open with detailed information about the event.
You can also use it to publish other events like .
I will try to keep it updated, but it is a lot of work so if any one wants to volunteer to be in charge of this, I really appreciate it.
I am also creating Google Groups so we can make a productive use of that feature.
In order to create these groups, I need your gmail address so, send me an email including the following information:

1. Your name (I have received emails in which the student never mentions his/her name and the email address is something like "imthegreatreggaettonmaster@hotmail.com". I am not Mary Poppins so please write your name somewhere inside the message)

2. Your gmail email address (the one you use to comment - I DO NOT need your password)

3. Another email to contact you. (Don't worry I will not add you to my msn :)!!!)

The ideal email would be something like:

Hi, miss!
This is Roberto Rojas.
My gmail is hola@gmail.com
I also have a hotmail account which is hola@hotmail.com
See you in class.
Bye.

Well, that's all for now.
See you soon!
Bye.

Please keep the sheets of paper in which you have the corrections. If you have any question, don't hesitate to contact me and we can appoint a meeting.

Here are the pictures that we took in class.

Experiences

Today I remembered that the first day of class you asked me if I had ever travelled abroad. I told you I had only been to Tacna. Well, today I interviewed some teachers that have been to London and asked them to tell me a little bit about their experiences with the weatherthere.
Here is what they said:

Gerardo Ñancupán : “The climate of London was very similar to Santiago. It wasn’t that cold. "
“There was no mist. The mist is a myth.”

Jessica Contreras : “What caught my attention was that everything was gray: the trees, the buildings. It seemed that there was no natural sunlight.”
“I found the weather very predictable. If the morning was cloudy you knew that at some point during that day it was going to rain.”
“Another thing that caught my attention was that it was frosty everywhere, the trees, etc.”

Neha Jagwani: “When I went in May, it was springtime, but the weather was very unreliable. It was very hot for a few hours, then it suddenly changed to a gentle shower, then it became chilly and windy.”

Changing weather - A story about British weather

GREENWICH

Everyone knows that when two people meet in the street or on a train, the first thing they talk about is the weather. They say things like "It's turned out nice again, hasn't it?" or "Not too bad for the time of year, is it?"I never used to understand why they were so interested in such a boring subject until I'd been living here for a couple of months. It was a day in July last year - July is supposed to be the height of the British summer - I remember the day really well. I got up at the usual time to go to the university - it was a bright, sunny morning, actually quite warm for Britain - so I wore my T-shirt, my oldest jeans and a pair of open sandals. To be on the safe side, I also took a thin pullover just in case it turned chilly in the evening. On the way to the university the wind got up, then it suddenly clouded over, went really dark and began to rain. I wasn't just a gentle shower - it was a real downpour. Okay, so everyone knows it rains a lot in Britain, but that's not the end of the story.Ten minutes later, I looked out of the window again and I couldn't believe it - the rain had turned to snow. By two o'clock in the afternoon it felt like mid-December. People decided to leave their cars at work and walk home instead because they didn't want to have an accident or get stuck in the snow. I wondered how on earth I was going to manage in just my T-shirt and pullover. As it turned out, I needn’t have worried - almost as quickly the weather changed again. By 4 o'clock it was really warm and I had to take my pullover off.So that's the answer - everyone talks about British weather because it's so unpredictable. The funny thing is that even though it is completely unpredictable, most British people make sure they listen religiously to the weather forecast at least twice a day. Then if it's wrong, which it almost always is, they complain about how unreliable the weathermen are and then go on to discuss the current state of the weather.

Booklet 1

The new booklet is at Picachu photocopy center now.
As you'll see we'll continue talking about weather and then we'll move to "Old age" .
The grammatical point is going to be "future". We'll start with simple future and then we'll move to future continuous and future perfect. Not that difficult, but you need to be careful as they are quite confusing.

Here you have some questions for you to answer on the "comments" section of this blog.
Choose at least 2. You can answer all of them if you want.
Even though these questions may be answered based in your opinion, you need to justify what you say. If you write that you don't like cold weather, for example, say why.

(Please make sure that your name appears somewhere on your post so I can identify you)

1. What do you like and dislike about the climate of your country?
2. What do you like and dislike about the climate of Iquique?
3. How does the climate of a country/city affect the people who live there? Think about these aspects of people's lives:
- their daily routines
- their eating and drinking habits
- their clothes
- their homes and other buildings
- their character and attitude to life
4. Has the weather ever affected your life in a dramatic way?
5. Do you know any old sayings about the weather, like "Red sky at night, sheperds' delight? (you can post some in Spanish if you don't know the English equivalent)

Hi, there!
Pictures at last!
Here we find "No more, no less" after their presentation.
Don't they look cool?
Unfortunately, I forgot to bring the camera today. My sincere apologies to the other groups. I'll find a way to make it up to you.
Well, today Jose volunteered to be encharged of giving yellow cards. This will be so until Thursday, April 5th. That day we'll appoint another person for this task.
Ah, and I decided to submit myself to the cards too. So, if you catch me speaking in Spanish, please, don't be afraid to tell on me.
Thank you again for the effort you put into your presentations. They were all interesting and informative.
Have a great week!
See you soon.
Bye.

Oral Presentations

Today we had the presentation of "No more no less".
Pictures coming soon. :)
It was a consistent presentation. I really appreciate the effort you put into it.
I would also appreciate if you could send me a copy of your ppt and the glossary to my email. Thanks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow we'll continue. Please come early.
Ah, and Miss Rebecca kindly agreed to let us use her class to finish with the presentations (just in case we need it).
So we'll do one hour, then you have a quiz with Miss Michelle and then we'll continue with our presentations.

Please, I expect you to be an attentive audience. Everybody likes to be heard.

I am aware that your anxiety levels will be higher than normal just don't panic and you'll be alright.

----------------------------------------------------------------
REMEMBER!! you have to hand in the grades.
Teachers are usually reluctant to this kind of evaluation for different reasons.
BUT
I'm confident that you're mature enough to be objective so DON'T PROVE ME WRONG. :x

See you tomorrow.

A new week.

Hope you had a great weekend.
Today we started implementing the "yellow card" and "red card" system. Fortunately, nobody got a red card, but I gave 4 yellow ones.
Pease don't consider cards as punishment... THEY ARE NOT!!!! They're just a way of motivating and pushing you into showing the English speaking person that dwells inside you.

If you missed the class, here you'll find the handouts.
The'll also be at Picachu photocopy center in case you can't print them.

Today's handout (pre-reading activities): http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgmvk7jn_6htmdcp

Homework: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dgmvk7jn_5fwbn35
